Now that the dust has settled... Was hacking ever cool? Is it?

Ever since the advent of the computer and coding, there has been a line of programmers bent on making a subversive, "cool" underground within the class of people who create or break the digital world. It felt like in the 90s, even 00s, hacking was intertwined with anarchism, a real counterculture current which was an ideological threat to the capitalist-federalist hegemony. Now, it seems that hacking has become so ubiquitous as a tool that there is no bent to it, no hacking "culture".

There's some anons here more tapped in to the programming/computer world, so maybe they know more than I.

Think you've summarized it adequately

Venture money and the deluge of strivers that came with it flushed out all ideological inclinations out of the space. It used to be that even the most ideologically disinterested devs would still care about licenses and whatnot, AI ended up being the final blow on that.

In many ways the phenomenon is universal though, basically any major sociological development past 2007 can be attributed to the same thing: the 1% has achieved complete regulatory capture, are being fed by the money printer that inflates away wages while raising their wealth.

death of ideology.. sniff...

Is the lesson to be learned that tools =/= ideology? That is, mediums aren't inherently liberatory unless you make them so. And, I guess, money is the root of all evil, but we were already told that one.

p much, the native Autist population of the computing world was completely decimated and driven to the brink of extinction by the influx of Normaloids. a silent tragedy

Uhuh, sounds like you know exactly what you're talking about. Next you're going to whine that women and non-whites destroyed the holy autist kingdom

This site is so ass bro all threads devolve into pearl clutching and genderslop at the first opportunity. I almost feel bad for OP for trying to start a discussion here.

If you see a comment you don't like leave it alone instead of shitflinging. If you insist on engaging then you have no right to complain about the audience here.

No one knows how to not feed a troll on an imageboard. Even before social media industrialized shitflinging, this medium was a Petri dish for the cultivation of trolling. Both productive discourse and the old hacker culture were a product of text dominance, of print culture. The technological substrate of the contrast between text and image changes with time but the underlying arguments are largely the same as they were half a century ago when television was the focus of criticism.

Imageboards are for banter. You just want to be spoonfed opinions instead of doing the hard research yourself (to feel superior to others around you) and that's why when anyone so much as spars a little bit you freak out because you didn't get what you want.

>banter
Brits always say this like it retroactively alters the tenor of a conversation to excuse dumb remarks. Too much Harry Potter shit over there must have them thinking it's a magic word or something. It's not.

What made computer scenes pre-2020 cool was that they weren't cool so people fucked off and left you alone. It gave it some sort of mystique. They were a natural walled-garden since you had to be pretty smart to do anything in the space, and borderline genius to do anything truly impressive.

I don't blame AI as much as I blame short-form video. TikTok ruined pretty much every subculture on the planet since you could get views/money by showing normies something they would've never seen otherwise. Literally everything is flooded with poseurs now to the point where LARP is a meme word. Being goth is now just wearing the makeup and posting online. Being a computer nerd is just installing NeoVim because you saw a YouTube video. Everything in service of looking cool in the panopticon.

There's no culture now because a culture can't take root, the moment something interesting happens anywhere 1000000 randos on the internet storm to it so they can get the social capital of being the first to some new niche thing. With AI they don't even need to be smart, so even more intellectual subcultures (e.g. hacking & software) are now overrun.

The only places that have maintained their culture come at a big cost of social status which is the last repellent for loser zoomers. Furries have been left mostly alone because of this, but their number is soon to be called. The TikTok zoomers are running out of subcultures to LARP in and furries seem to be the last ones left. I already see e-girls wearing the Spirit Halloween furry masks on Instagram, give it a year and kids will be asking for full on fursuits for Christmas.

>the deluge of strivers that came with it
It cannot be overstated how much these people ruined the industry. Nothing gets me more pissed off than seeing some dumbass 20-something posting about how they're pulling all-nighters to fucking prompt Claude to deliver some absolute dogshit CRUD app nobody cares about.

You can see how many of them are completely incapable of existing outside the confines of a school by how they act once they get a job after college. They turn work into yet another version of the classroom. They recreate the hierarchies, assignments, report cards, everything. When people wonder why Asia has so many "geniuses" yet has failed to innovate for centuries, this is exactly why. There is no room for freedom or creativity, just mindless busywork so you can get graded on something. It's actually insane mind-raped behavior. These people are mentally ill.

I hope they're happy with their 996 schedules instead of unlimited PTO and 4hrs of mandatory work.

The best part is that this is completely self-imposed. Software Engineering jobs have gotten immeasurably easier with AI, instead of being cool with that they're now rushing to build AI-slop shit as fast as possible. My org is now full of abandoned repos that cost between $50-100k in token usage so these bug people can get their promotions.

you explained very well the dilution of intellectual/niche cultures into mere identity. it's interesting and a little sad, though i know it's not like the ability to learn or do things has up and disappeared. guess i wish we kept standards alive.
