This substack article puts into words something I've been trying to identify for a while now. It feels like everything is being reduced to one global status ranking from which there is no escape. An average guy, or even a loser, used to be able to leverage their strengths and create a life that allowed them to live with a semblance of dignity, but it's all been reduced to "cope." The internet is particularly good at identifying and revealing copes, unraveling these narratives that allowed normal people to live with confidence, and ensuring these people know they’re losers and that they better stay that way.
He explains it better than I do. It's a longer read but I think it's worth it. It’s one of the more convincing explanations of recent internet/zoomer culture I’ve seen. Now that I’ve read it I can’t stop seeing everything through this lens, and I'm worried we will never escape it.

Idk much about him. I just ended up on that article via a link from somewhere else. I tried reading his other stuff and didn't think the rest was that good. But I thought this one was perceptive despite his annoying way of writing.

I thought he had some interesting reads when I first found him but he had this delusional idea that he was a significant figure within far right spaces; I had never even heard of him until discovering his substack a few years ago, a decade after the fact. I also suspect that he cribbed most of his ideas from other writers, which tends to be the pattern with guys like this.

Ok I have read Walt before and have found some of his stuff at least entertaining if not exactly convincing. But this (paragraph 2) is one of the worst written things I've read all year.

I think this is just a natural development of human cognition as a result of social media. The image of a person, a human personality, is no deeper than the images on a social media account, because that is how they learn to understand a human. Imagine if the concept someone has of "being strong" is looking strong in a picture, then that is what they are going to pursue. And hence, you get mogging and looksmaxxing.

Let's consider the opposite. A person with no social media. Every person they learn to understand, has to come from a deep, in-person interactions that draw heavily from their own understanding of themselves. Imagine a young man wanted to be strong, and his understand of it was develop by watching men act strong, and perform strength.

These become two completely different personalities, and two completely different concepts of reality. And remember, virtual reality is virtual. For those who do not know, virtual does not mean digital.
