I won about $50 in a metaculus prediction contest. I was pleased with myself given that I didn't put much effort into my estimations, I just made up numbers that seemed plausible while drinking a beer.

Something about the comparison to Babylon is rather resonant... But I think it's best to frame it is the already existing, billion dollar industry that existed before the current betting boom, which wasn't any less evil (or successful) in principle.

I’ve spent maybe 50$ over the course of a few years on those apps. It’s degraded casino, no free drinks or lights. I doubt it goes away any time soon unless Americans have a serious reevaluation of their values.
