Specific Types of Redditors
Post image
There is a specific type of Redditor, age ranging between 35 and 65, who posts judgemental comments to the point of complete indifference as to whether someone lives or dies and then also posts on the subreddit for their own specific car and /r/personalfinance. When there’s a story about someone’s rural property burning down, these guys are always the first ones to comment that the owner should have known better than to have built a wood house inside of a forest.

I’ve seen this archetype in all sorts of subreddits, from lots of different countries (most Anglophones, some Latino), both genders, both childless and with children. My theory is that these are people who have spent 20 years doing work they didn’t particularly enjoy in order to get ahead and now make up for lost time by taking out their misery on others as a means of affirming to themselves that they made the right choice.

My first assumption is that this is just the nature of impersonal communication, which leads to impersonal thinking (I think impersonal is the right word). Also, there are a certain type of person who feels a pride in being a tough, pragmatic thinker and speaker. There is more I could say about this being a sign of mental insanity, but I am phoneppsting and cannot be bothered.

reddit attracts neurotic, will plan for the apocalypse types. they like to believe that if you're prepared and smart enough you can be safe in any situation. on nepal flood videos posts on reddit youd find comments like "why are they not running so slow??" "why did that guy look back instead of running?"

it's an inability to come to terms with lack of control

this is just human nature. people hate to face up to the fact that it's possible for your number to come up and for your life to end in some horrible way without you being able to do anything about it. hence the rationalisations: i wouldn't crash my car, i would escape a natural disaster, i would survive a plane crash. at least in the atheistic west we all assume we'll be the ones to sit in seat 11A. maybe devout muslims are different, they truly seem to believe that everything is the will of allah.

This is a third world mindset and it lends itself to the creation of caste systems, permanent underclasses, and slaves.
