Petrarchive – Metal thread

Released today. I'm not a megafan and haven't kept up with them after Crack the Skye. It sounds a little... thin? It's not that sort of meaty riffage that characterizes sludge. Some Rushisms. I wonder if the fate of every progressive metal band is just to age into Rush but metally. I can't hear the absence of Hinds necessarily, maybe it's specifically that riffage that he added that's missing. Some really cheezy keyboard moments and this is coming from a hand-over-heart cheezy synth lover. I can't really hear the "mourning" tone though that's a little uncouth to say, I'm sure the band genuinely grieves their former bandmate. But it's not coming through in the sound. It's not a very dark, mournful album sonically.

I love speed metal, though some don't recognize it as a distinct subgenre. They usually use the term to mean the same thing as thrash metal, but speed metal tends to be slower tempo and is more rooted in traditional metal / NWOBHM. Its essentially just fast heavy metal (think of Exciter by Judas Priest) or you can think of it as proto thrash metal. I like it cause you have the faster tempos and energy of thrash metal but less aggressive overall sound

No, they're post-hardcore, but I'm not a genre purist and Unwound are great anyway. Post-hardcore like that and Converge I think are a good bridge between emo and metal, >>11970. I initially didn't respond because I find that people who want to get into metal usually accomplish that on their own and people who are looking for some sort of genre crossover "introduction" aren't going to be too interested in the genre. In other words, either you know you like it or you don't so there's no point in trying to sneak a little metal in in the disguise of other genres. But there's still a lot in the intervening ground like the aforementioned post-hardcore, post-metal, noise, crossover, that sort of thing. It really depends on your individual tastes more than anything. I guess a better place to start would be what do you like most in emo and what are you looking for in metal? What piques your interest exactly?
