i really wish nolan would get a real writer to work on his movies. weird editing, nonsensical pacing. the film included too much and somehow also included too little. the score and cinematography seemed to imply a film made up of wide, slow landscape shots à la Lawrence of Arabia, but the editing flipped through it all at lighting speed like channel surfing.
“zeus’ law” as a narrative device is genuinely retarded. “xenia,” the concept of greek hospitality, was not discussed in that way. cultural practices like that are deeply ingrained, to such a degree that having frequent conversations about them feels unnatural. tom holland explaining “zeus’ law” every ten seconds is like if a modern story frequently explains capitalism.
“capitalism… it’s a system where private individuals control the means of production…”
odysseus is nothing like odysseus. watch o brother where art thou for a genuinely accurate odysseus.
“our age of bronze is collapsing” made me cringe so hard i squirmed. nolan really watched one youtube video of the bronze age collapse and reframed the whole story around that.
the idea that odysseus and his crew were the historical sea peoples is genuinely not a bad idea, but jesus it was done horribly.
circe was good, i liked athena, odysseus’ dumbass crew felt accurate, polyphemus felt like himself - but enough was cut out that it all failed to connect as well as it did in the original story.
just read the original (not the wilson version). it’s not beyond your ability, it’s a fun story.
the movie was made for morons who want to consider themselves intelligent but don’t want to actually read anything
