If you have in mind academics in low-verifiability disciplines, I would think that the filtering mechanisms, imperfect though they may be, probably do mean mean that they have a genuinely high verbal IQ. They test well.
It's also true that the verbal domain is of its nature often less amenable to verification than in the sciences/mathematics/engineering.

The issue in sociology isn't the IQ of sociologists, it's the open political biases of those who take part, and their open hostility toward people who don't follow the party line. Sociology works OK when the biases are able to be put aside.
I know a case where a woman with a certain rare disease which causes severe autism-like symptoms, purportedly attained a PhD in a social science field. However, said woman was completely non-verbal (not in the [wrong] sense that she's mute, but that she can't understand words at all). Obviously, her mother used "Facilitated Communication" to basically use her as a ventriloquist's dummy. From what I've seen, Arday's talks don't even touch on his "topics" he "researched" and are more like general, TED-like motivational talks; I have wondered, therefore, whether somebody else wrote his stuff for him (I use the term advisedly) and he was just the "face" of this operation.
