This and the original run of Avatar hit the sweet spot between anime and western animation. After that both sides leaned hard into their own corners and now your choice is either Gigamoe Molestation School: Sugoi!! or Ugliest Shit You've Ever Seen Wokepragranda.

For a brief moment in the late 2000s we almost had it all

even early to mid 2010s was a good period for these movies. we got big hero 6, tangled and the first Zootopia movie which admittedly does cross into the "wokepraganda" territory as you call it but still pretty good.

I am curious about why post 2020s movies and shows leaned too hard into mental health stuff. horror movies especially are now are all about themes of trauma and grief. it's like we finally started to look inward and then went too far. a video essay youtuber can probably connect this to pandemic and capitalism

I wonder if it is just the change to the human mind as a result of social media. The individual identity has become absolutely paramount to an average person, so stories of identity are going to be central. And because people have become obsessed with "becoming someone else", the personality is always going to be treated as something to be solved. And because people jsut cannot become whatever they want, and they simply choose to ignore natural limits, the blame any shortcomings on "trauma".

yes. and also there is nothing to regulate this now. in the olden times this intense level of obsession with the self was looked down upon but vanity (of body or mind) has ceased to be a deadly sin our times. hopefully next wave of contrarianism deals with this. I think rs spaces instinctively recognise this hence the incessant posting of that one jemima instagram story where she says "I think you guys might be thinking about yourself too much" but you will find the same person who posts this image in rs comments section make a 800 word post about their neuroses the very next day. they can't help it. so even those who are aware of this are not immune to engaging in it. myself included

Supposedly this is because 2d animation was much more unionised than 3d animation, so the artists had freedom to make stuff with sovl instead of slop
