I played in a group for a year or two, maybe seven years ago. It was the sort of standard high fantasy setting (Pathfinder, mostly the D&D 3.5e-derived version), and there were two different guys who took on the role of the DM. The guy who mostly stuck to pre-made campaigns with big resets at the end was the better DM, and I had a lot of fun even if sometimes I ended up at odds with how the other guys wanted to play; I was a late addition to the group.
Messing around in fantasy worlds was fun, and I remember it being a blast when I impromptu acted out chopping some monster's head off. In a later campaign I got my character killed and had a meltdown over it, and felt a weird amount of grief when I got home after. This character's replacement I made to be his "friend," but was really just a beefier, more cowardly version of the first guy, and how I played him pissed a lot of the other players off. In the final battle against a dragon I was one of the last standing and clueless what to do, and only after someone else saved the day did I find out that a spell I had been using negated some special feature of the dragon and would have meant---had I pointed it out---that I could have dealt a final blow and been the hero had. (I think I ran away instead; DM said he wouldn't have let it happen even if I had known.) I think the last character I played was one I heavily min-maxxed, but for reasons somewhat outside of my control it didn't really pay off, and made the situation pretty unsatisfying.
Later on I started wanting to play more grounded games with a focus on tactics and numbers, but the group I was in was mostly aimed at dicking around and having fun. A cascade of people quitting culminated in the DM quitting too, and the whole thing fell apart for a while. I think some of them re-grouped and started playing again, but I wasn't invited back and wasn't interested either.
The numbers aspect of min-maxxing was really satisfying for me, and I got interested in systems like Harnmaster, but I never bothered trying to find a group to play with again after the first stint. Don't have the drive to either, and I think other things have replaced my old interest in TRPGs. Occasionally I get an interest in trying to write some kind of fantasy story, and I do write, but musing about fantasy stuff is more like idle daydreaming left over from when I was a kid than a real interest.
This reminded me I still have a folder full of old TRPG stuff, including inspiration pics from when I considered running my own games.
