Most aesthetic sport by far nothing even comes close

I think this year's World Cup has chill vibes, but I am not a football person so I can't judge for certain. I am having fun watching the matches sporadically as a very casual viewer.

When i talk about death metal I usually say stuff like "yeah I dunno I suppose there's some technical ability on display, but I just can't get over the weird voices they do". And metalheads will smirk and exchange knowing glances, that I have been filtered by one bump in the road. And I can be aware of this but I still watch them listening to weird gloomy screeching/growling music and all I feel is a sense of disgust.

I think it's like that with soccer. You can try to explain that you primarily associate it with 5'1" honduran kids in your high school arguing about ronaldo and messi, that 90% of all images you've seen related to soccer in your life have prominently featured an advertisement for a petromonarchy's airline, that it's not only the most lumpen sport ever made, it may be the single most lumpen *thing* to exist. But there is simply an aesthetic gap here that cannot be bridged, and why would we want to bridge it? viva la raza

It's a hypermasculine, vulgar, and frequently dishonorable sport. But undeniably beautiful.

Argentina vs Cabo Verde tonight. Could be a massacre. Messi gets his golden boot tonight I reckon.

I like watching it sometimes with my family and friends. Perhaps it is this social-cultural aspect of the sport that makes it enjoyable. Otherwise, I don't think I "get it" as others seem to do.

I love Jude Bellingham, he's handsome and talented and seems like a nice young man and (most importantly) he has a perfect name. The male gender's answer to Holly Golightly with the added benefit of being real.

Well, they probably smirk because it's the primary difficulty people have with metal, including many if not most metalheads themselves when they start with the genre. So it's less of a judgement and more of an "we've all been there" sort of understanding. Also, there is a wealth of metal out there without harsh vocals - commonly called "clean vocals" - ranging from normal singing to operatic vocals to rapping, that is available for enjoyment if you actually do "appreciate the technical ability on display" if you so claim. I don't think you do, and neither do the metalheads you talk to, who can sense your dismissal of the entire genre from a mile away, which is where the smirking in response comes from. It's funny that you and others associate metal with lumpenproles when metalheads consider themselves part of an anointed elite. It's all about one's viewpoint in life, innit...

is it common for post-colonial nations to support their former colonisers? Kylian Mbappe might be half-algerian half-cameroonian but I'm fairly sure people in algiers or yaounde don't support france.

That's a very one-dimensional view of post-colonial societies informed entirely by vitriolic online discourse. In reality the situation is always more complicated and nuanced. I haven't been to Francophone Africa but I've met some people from there who are quite proud of e.g. speaking French, who are informed about and enjoy European French culture. Likewise I've talked to people from Commonwealth countries, will never forget a certain grandma from Antigua who was the biggest monarchist you'll ever meet

Also just found out that there was a halftime show, without knowing a single thing about football I can guess that was an American addition lol.
