I went through a big Esperanto phase. Hard to explain what it's like to be a teenager and to think that interesting things would happen just by being interesting.

I had a go as a teen. It's an interesting project but the language itself is vaguely ugly and it hardly unlocks very much compared to learning Spanish, which is probably barely harder.

I respect it for its leftist/internationalist goal, but the actual timbre and structure of the language never quite appealed to me. It led me to the realization that natural languages that have developed over time have an auditory aesthetic beauty, each of their own kind, that only comes from being a naturally evolved language. Kind of like how GMO foods always have that plain taste, or lack thereof, and more 'natural' produce always unlocks the gamut of flavors in your mouth that you didn't know you were missing out on. I guess this is a rather unscientific take on languages, that there is an element of both subjective art and also natural agentic evolution to them, and that even the most logically-designed conlang will never be able to replicate that.

To add onto this, it seems to me that "learning Esperanto" isn't so much like learning a new language to speak and use, as it is filling in the gaps in Indo-European etymology and grammar structure, because of how directly it pulls from the European languages. Learning Esperanto is closer to general linguistic study than it is learning a language like you normally would. I don't think that's the main reason it never caught on in the long term; though its Eurocentricity doesn't help, its failure and the usurpation of English as the global language are obviously structural in nature.

I find myself weary as to the sociality of an artificial language. Seems terribly isolating.

I learn languages mostly for reasons related to literature. I know Esperanto writers and poets have existed and still exist to this day, but I personally don't find their works compelling enough to learn it. As >>10254 said, its internationalist premises are commendable, if a bit Eurocentric (I don't see how an globally encompassing auxiliary language could be constructed; the best attempt I know is interlingua, and it is limited to Latinic languages).
I guess if I were told that a great work of fiction was written in the language, I'd at least try to learn it.

Same as the other posters said. It is a nice goal and an interesting linguistic thought in act but without literature or culture, what's the point?
